Ezetimibe is a medicine used to lower levels of total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood. Ezetimibe is for patients who cannot control their cholesterol levels by diet and exercise alone. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to treat high cholesterol. You should stay on a cholesterol-lowering diet while taking this medicine.

Ezetimibe works to reduce the amount of cholesterol your body absorbs. ZETIA does not help you lose weight. Ezetimibe has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks.

Ezetimibe is used either alone or with other drugs (e.g., HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors or "statins"), along with a low cholesterol/low fat diet, to help lower cholesterol in the blood. Reducing cholesterol helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Ezetimibe is sold as brand name Zetia.
