General Info:
Metaproterenol (also known as Orciprenaline) is used in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. Metaproterenol dilates the bronchi and bronchioles, increasing airflow.
Metaproterenol is a moderately selective beta(2)-adrenergic agonist that stimulates receptors of the smooth muscle in the lungs, uterus, and vasculature supplying skeletal muscle, with minimal or no effect on alpha-adrenergic receptors. This stimulation causes the muscles to relax, which opens up the airways and allows more air to get into and through the lungs.
Metaproterenol also has some effects on decreasing the activity of mast cells in the lungs. Mast cells play an important role in inflammation and allergic reactions.
Metaproterenol medication is produced under next brand names:
- Alotec
- Alupent
- Metaprel
- Novasmasol
