Ethionamide is used with other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB). Ethionamide is an antibiotic and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Ethionamide treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Take all of the ethionamide that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated.

Ethionamide may cause stomach upset, a loss of appetite, a metallic taste in your mouth, or excessive salivation (mouth watering). Notify your doctor if these side effects are persistent or severe.

Ethionamide is sold as brand name Trecator.
