General Info:
Cefpodoxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall so that the wall ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.
Cefpodoxime is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia; bronchitis; gonorrhea; and ear, skin, throat, and urinary tract infections.
To clear up your infection completely, take Cefpodoxime for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
Cefpodoxime marketed by Pharmacia & Upjohn under the trade name Vantin.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking cefpodoxime and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; hives; or a rash);
- rash, redness, or itching;
- severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;
- mucous or blood in the stool; or
- unusual bleeding or bruising.
- mild nausea or diarrhea, or
- a yeast infection of the mouth or vagina.
